The exhibition is full of phenomena like fog, clouds, mist or aureoles of light. The participating artists share an interest in the conditions that make images come into existence – or let them become invisible. The relations between colour and light, transparency and translucency, focus and blur are central for the exhibited paintings and photograms as well as for the objects and projections and installations.
The underlying concept for the selection of works in the show is based on the concept of ‘the diaphane’, as laid out by French philosopher and art historian Georges Didi- Huberman in his text Eloge du diaphane (Praise of the Diaphane). Didi-Huberman refers to the Italian Lodovico Dolce (1508–1568), a renaissance theorist of painting, who uses the Italian word ‘la lucidezza’ to describe the phenomenon of the diaphane. He discusses the relation of light (luce) and color (colori) and how light makes colours come to life by pervading its transparent layers. Colour itself is formless and light itself is discarnate. An image evolves from the formless, evades and returns – depending on how the light activates the colour.
